Monopoli – 35 minute drive from Villa Gufo
Monopoli has a long and fascinating history dating back to the 5th century BC, when the area was inhabited by the Messapians, an ancient population of Puglia. Later, Monopoli became part of the Roman Empire, developing into an important trade and port city. The name Monopoli literally means “one city”, referring to its strategic location as the only major port town in the region at that time.
The historic center of Monopoli is a maze of narrow streets, whitewashed houses, baroque churches, and charming squares. You’ll find local shops, restaurants, and small cafés where you can soak in the authentic Puglian atmosphere.
Lungomare – Promenade
When you enter Monopoli via the small beach Cala Porta Vecchia, follow the city walls to the right. This will lead you to Lungomare Santa Maria, the charming seaside boulevard where locals gather for their evening stroll and to enjoy the stunning sea views.
Along this promenade, you’ll pass several important historical landmarks, including Bastione di Babula and Bastione di Santa Maria. These imposing bastions were part of the city’s old defensive walls and played a crucial role in the 16th century during the Spanish rule over Monopoli.
If you continue walking, you will reach Castello Carlo V, a fortress built by the Spanish to protect the city from attacks by sea. Until the mid-20th century, the castle served as a prison, but today it is used as an exhibition space for cultural events and art displays.
At Castello Carlo V, you’ll see an archway—walk through it, turn left, and you’ll arrive at the Porto Antico (Old Port)!

Porto Antico – The old harbor
The old harbor of Monopoli is one of the most picturesque spots in the city. Here, you’ll find the traditional “gozzi” boats, bright blue fishing boats still used by local fishermen today. It’s a fantastic place for a stroll and to enjoy the stunning sea views.
From the harbor, walk through a small gateway into another historic part of the old town. If you go through the L’Arco del Porto and turn right, you’ll arrive directly at Monopoli’s main square, surrounded by numerous restaurants and bars.

Monopoli and Its Remarkable Churches
Monopoli is home to many beautiful and unique churches. From afar, you can see the stunning tower of the Cattedrale Maria Santissima della Madia rising above the city.
When the people of Monopoli began constructing the cathedral in 1107, the work soon came to a halt due to a lack of beams for the roof structure.
Exactly ten years after the construction had stopped, the bishop received a message: a gift was about to arrive in the harbor of Monopoli. The bishop rushed to the port and found a raft carrying an image of the Madonna and Child. The beams of the raft were used for the cathedral’s roof structure, and the image was placed on the cathedral tower.

Just a Few Steps Past the Cathedral, a Surprising Sight Awaits
Just a few steps beyond the cathedral, you’ll find a church that draws attention in a rather unexpected way. Officially named Santa Maria del Suffragio, the locals refer to it as Chiesa del Purgatorio—the “Church of Purgatory.” That name is well deserved, as skulls and skeletons adorn the building.
On the entrance door, two skulls face each other, surrounded by various symbols. Among them, you’ll notice a crown and a bishop’s mitre, but also different tools of labor. This imagery conveys a powerful message: whether rich or poor, in death, everyone is equal.
While most churches honor prominent clergy and nobility, this one is dedicated to the common people—in a rather macabre way. Inside, eight mummified bodies are displayed, dressed in black robes adorned with red flames, symbolizing purgatory.
Even when the church is closed, you can still catch a glimpse of the mummies—just peek through the left window for an eerie but fascinating sight.
