If you lose your ID or passport, or if they are stolen, you must report the incident to the local police. You will receive a proof of loss or theft. Afterward, you should contact your embassy. You should also get in touch with your airline immediately. In some cases, airlines will allow you to board the flight without ID or a passport, especially if your return flight is booked at the same time as the outbound flight. However, you will need documents from the airline, and not all airlines allow this.

Break-In or Theft in Rental Car
In case of a break-in or theft in a rental car, contact the rental company immediately and go to the local police station. You will need an official police report for the rental car insurance. Be aware that the police in southern Italy can sometimes be unhelpful in these situations. During the tourist season, they rarely come to the scene to assess the break-in. Therefore, it is highly recommended to take photos of the car damage as soon as you notice the break-in.
